xSidebar for Seamonkey

xSidebar is an extension that brings the look and feel of Firefox style sidebars to Seamonkey.

In addition, xSidebar also implements the infrastructure - the XUL elements and javascript APIs from Firefox - to make porting Firefox sidebar extensions to Seamonkey as painless as possible.

Motivation

My primary browser is Seamonkey. Unfortunately most of the cool sidebars that I want are only available for Firefox so I have to run both browsers on my system, switching back and forth whenever I need to access a specific feature. So I decided to see if I could port some of the extensions I wanted to Seamonkey.

Investigating the matter I found that the sidebar system in Mozilla Suite and hence Seamonkey is an arcane Heath Robinson conglomeration apparently designed and written by the Abenobashi scriptwriters when they were totally sloshed. In comparison the effort needed to hook a sidebar into Firefox is simplicity in itself. This means that most sidebar extension writers either don't know or don't care to reverse engineer the extremely obscure APIs needed to get their sidebar registered in Mozilla Suite and Seamonkey.

Hence the first step in getting Firefox sidebar extensions to run in Seamonkey was to port all the support hooks in Firefox to Seamonkey as an enabling extension. This eventually became xSidebar.

Usage

Install xSidebar into Seamonkey. Restart. A new submenu will be available. (View->Sidebar) with a list of available sidebars. This includes all the sidebars registered in panels.rdf as well as any Firefox style sidebars that you have installed.
